Objective: To update the bibliometric profile of global SDF literature, focusing on publication trends, contributing countries, study designs and mapping thematic research evolution.

Material & Method: Publications were searched in the Scopus database from inception to 20 April 2025. Data were extracted and cleaned using biblioMagika® and OpenRefine. Study designs were manually classified through abstract review. Publication trends were analysed using SPSS software. Data visualisations were generated using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny.

Results: Of 727 records identified, 659 publications were included in the analysis. Laboratory studies (45.83%) dominated, followed by clinical trials (19.58%) and reviews/guidelines (15.78%). Publication output rose modestly until 2013 (n=52), increased between 2014 and 2020 (n=197), and surged after 2021 onwards (n=410), peaking in 2024 with 119 papers. Both pre- and post-COVID periods showed significantly higher output than earlier decades (p<0.01). The United States was the most productive country, while Hong Kong generated the most highly cited work. Thematic analysis identified seven clusters:  1) Interaction with Dental Structures and Materials, 2) Paediatric Caries Management, 3) Remineralisation and Cariostatic Action, 4) Antimicrobial and Biofilm Disruption, 5) Aesthetics and Acceptance, 6) Public Health and Clinical Prevention, and 7) Education and Awareness. Early studies centred on laboratory science, which progressed to clinical applications, and more recently shifted towards public health and implementation challenges.

Conclusion: Over the past five decades, SDF research has matured from laboratory science to practice-oriented and policy-relevant investigations. Future research should prioritise translating evidence into policy and practice, integrating SDF into public health programmes, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Background: Surgical sutures play a critical role in wound healing, especially in dental applications where the oral environment presents unique challenges such as high vascularization and constant exposure to saliva. While Indonesian-made silk sutures offer an affordable alternative to imported options, their mechanical performance under simulated oral conditions remains underexplored. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical properties of Indonesian-made silk sutures after immersion in artificial saliva for varying durations (0, 1, 7, and 14 days). Methods: An in vitro experimental study was conducted using 20 sterile silk suture specimens (4-0 gauge). Five specimens were tested in their dry state (control), while the remaining specimens were immersed in artificial saliva for 1, 7, and 14 days at 37°C. Tensile load, tensile strength, and elongation were assessed using a Universal Testing Machine. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. Results: Prolonged immersion significantly impacted the sutures' mechanical properties. Tensile load and tensile strength decreased progressively, with the lowest values observed on Day 7 (7.23 ± 0.99 N and 409.46 ± 55.77 MPa, respectively). Conversely, elongation (%) increased significantly, peaking on Day 14 (45.08 ± 4.53%). Conclusion: Indonesian-made silk sutures exhibit reduced tensile strength and load but increased elongation with prolonged exposure to artificial saliva. The sutures meet the minimum tensile strength requirements of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), however their performance under prolonged immersion need improvement, Further research should focus on improving their resistance to degradation and performance in the oral environment.

Objective. This study aims to determine the relationship of stunting to the pattern of dental caries in elementary school children aged 6-12 years in Gowa Regency. Material and method. This type of research is an observational analytical study using a cross-sectional approach. This study is divided into several stages, namely 1) Measurement of weight and height 2) Interviews using questionnaires and 3) Examination of the oral cavity to determine the pattern of dental caries in children based on the ICDAS classification. Result. The results showed that stunting and nonstunting children in the right permanent first molar of maxilla were dominant in the initial lesion stage with a value of 51%, in the upper left maxilla 47%, in the lower left mandible dominant in the extensive lesion stage 42%, in the lower right mandible 48%. Conclusion. There is no significant relationship between stunting and dental caries patterns in children aged 6-12 years in Gowa Regency. However, stunted children tend to experience more severe tooth decay, especially in the first permanent molar of mandible.

Objective: Tooth extraction is a common medical procedure that can be classified classified as simple or complex, depending on the condition of the tooth. Supportive therapies are being explored to  accelerate wound healing after tooth extraction. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) are known to have positive effects on overall body and oral health. This study aimed to analyze the differences in collagen density during wound healing process after tooth extraction with the administration of supportive therapy by combining HA and probiotic L. reuteri in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Material and Methods: Collagen density was measured using Masson's trichrome staining. Observations were performed with light microscope at 400x magnification and Fiji/ImageJ software. Collagen measurement was observed on the blue-colored surface of the specimen. The unit of collagen density obtained in a single field of view was expressed as an area percentage (area%).

Result: One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in collagen density between the groups on days 3 (p = 0.005), 7 (p<0.001), and 14 (p= 0.009). In the combination therapy group (T3), the average collagen density was significantly higher than in the other groups on days 7 and 14 (p <0 .05).

Conclusion: Supportive therapy combining HA and L. reuteri probiotic combination therapy can increase collagen density during wound healing in Wistar rats, with the strongest effects observed on days 7 and 14.

Objective: Given the role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in pulp inflammation and the potential of natural agents to enhance conventional medicaments, this study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of Moringa oleifera extract and chitosan, in combination with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)₂], against P. gingivalis

Material and Methods: The laboratory experiment used 12 groups with three replicates (36 samples in total). The groups included: (1) Moringa oleifera with Ca(OH)₂, (2) chitosan with Ca(OH)₂, and (3) M. oleifera, chitosan, and Ca(OH)₂ mixture. Each group had four subgroups: Ca(OH)₂ control and concentration ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, and 2:1. Antibacterial activity was measured via disc diffusion at 24, 48, and 72 h, followed by One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test.

Results: M. oleifera combined with calcium hydroxide showed increased inhibition reaching 10.9 mm at 72 h (p = 0.137). Chitosan-calcium hydroxide peaked at 48 h (12.7 mm), decreasing by 72 h (p = 0.092). The diameter of the three-component mixture reached 11.0 mm at 72 h (p = 0.079).            

Conclusions: Although the combinations did not significantly enhance the antibacterial effect of calcium hydroxide, trends suggest a potential synergistic effect at higher concentrations and with prolonged exposure.

Introduction: We report a case where oral symptoms, initially suspected as adverse effects of chemoradiotherapy, evolved into systemic mucositis and dermatitis, leading to a toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) diagnosis.
Case Report: An 80-year-old man presented for conservative treatment of tongue cancer. Based on his preference, superselective intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy was chosen instead of surgery. Thirty-six days after treatment began, the patient developed a fever of 38.4°C and worsening oral mucositis (grade 3 CTCAE Ver. 4.0). Subsequently, facial dermatitis appeared and was initially diagnosed as radiation dermatitis, leading to topical steroid therapy. However, skin symptoms with blisters and erosions spread across the body. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and TEN were strongly suspected, and systemic corticosteroid therapy was initiated. A biopsy and clinical symptoms confirmed TEN. Corticosteroids were tapered and discontinued by day 62. The patient’s symptoms improved. Seventeen months later, multiple lung metastases were observed, and the patient died of primary disease.
Discussion: Severe drug eruptions during chemoradiotherapy are difficult to diagnose because they must be differentiated from adverse events caused by the therapy itself.
Conclusion: We should consider a possibility of SJS/TEN during chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancer.

Introduction: Post-extraction bleeding, which is difficult to stop, is rare. However, arterial hemorrhage may lead to a state in which hemostasis is difficult to obtain. We herein report a case in which arterial embolization effectively stopped hemorrhagic bleeding due to mandibular third molar extraction.

Case Report: The patient was a 24-year-old man who suffered from abnormal bleeding during left mandibular third molar extraction (tooth no. 48). As hemostasis via compression with gauze would be difficult, the patient was referred to our department for emergency treatment to stop the bleeding. There was nothing special to note in terms of his vital signs at the time of his initial visit, with pulsatile bleeding from the extraction socket of the left mandible. A panoramic radiograph showed the root of tooth no. 48 was suitably separated. On the day of his visit, hemostasis was performed via compression using tie-over gauze. No significant bleeding was observed after the removal. However, the patient visited the emergency department with a complaint of re-bleeding, and arterial bleeding from the extraction socket was observed upon the release of compression with gauze. A traumatic pseudoaneurysm consistent with the site of tooth extraction was observed by a selective angiographic examination during hospitalization. Hemostatic treatment with transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was performed at the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. The course was favorable following treatment on the seventh day after extraction, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in remission.

Introduction: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common pediatric soft tissue sarcoma, often affecting the head and neck. This report presents a rare case of embryonal RMS in the buccal region, emphasizing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Case Report: A 5-year-old boy presented with swelling in the left buccal region. Clinical examination revealed a firm mass. CT scan showed a heterogeneous lesion with necrosis, extending into adjacent spaces. Histopathology revealed spindle-shaped pleomorphic cells, and immunohistochemistry was positive for Desmin and Vimentin. The patient received six cycles of vincristine, adriamycin, and cyclophosphamide (VAC regimen), followed by radiotherapy. The tumor regressed completely with no residual disease on follow-up imaging.

Discussion: Accurate diagnosis required histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The case highlights the effectiveness of multimodal therapy, consistent with prior reports, though limited imaging restricted evaluation of minimal residual disease.

Conclusion: Early diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment of pediatric buccal RMS are critical for favorable oncologic and functional outcomes.
